Student Volunteer Intern – Office of International Affairs (Fall 2024)

Duties
Undergraduate (UG), graduate (G), and/or law school (LS) interns serve on the following OIA teams.
- Cyber (UG): Assists foreign authorities to secure electronic evidence from U.S.-based electronic service providers in support of criminal investigations and prosecutions.
- Incoming Mutual Legal Assistance (UG, G, and LS): Assists foreign authorities to secure non-electronic evidence (records, interviews, testimony, etc.) in support of criminal investigations and prosecutions.
- Litigation & Legal Policy (LS): Oversees the litigation of all international extradition matters in U.S. courts, including analyzing extradition requests prior to referral to a U.S. Attorney’s Office, participating in extradition matters in active litigation, and developing a nationwide strategy for extradition litigation.
- International Prisoner Transfer (UG, G, and LS): Administers the program that allows convicted foreign nationals sentenced in the U.S. and Americans sentenced abroad to transfer to their home country to serve their sentence provided statutory and treaty requirements are satisfied.
- Regional Teams (UG, G and LS): Assists U.S. prosecutors in securing the return of fugitives from the regions below to face justice in the U.S., and coordinates with foreign authorities to share evidence with U.S. prosecutors for use in criminal investigations and prosecutions. Also assists foreign authorities in securing the extradition of fugitives from the U.S. There are five regional teams:
- Europe & Eurasia
- Mexico , Central America, & Spanish-speaking Caribbean
- Asia/Pacific, Africa, & the Middle East
- Canada & English-speaking Caribbean
- South America
- Management and Administration (UG): Assists OIA’s supervisors, attorneys, and International Affairs Specialists to ensure the effective and efficient processing of extradition, mutual legal assistance, and prisoner transfer requests by implementing sound project management fundamentals and lean processes, proactively engaging stakeholders, and performing necessary administrative and office support functions.

Requirements
Conditions of Employment
- You must be a U.S. Citizen to qualify for this position.
- You must undergo a pre-employment security investigation.
- You must be currently enrolled, and in good academic standing, in a full or part-time accredited degree/diploma program.
- You must have spent less than 24 months (consecutive or non-consecutive) outside the United States in the last 5 years.

Qualifications
To be considered eligible for a volunteer internship applicants must be actively enrolled while participating in the internship. Junior and Senior undergraduate students, graduate students and first- year (second semester) only, second- and third-year law students are encouraged to apply. Undergraduate and graduate students with a strong writing background and an interest in international matters and criminal law may be particularly interested in these positions. Knowledge of a foreign language is desirable but not essential.
Additional information
All internships are UNPAID. The student is considered a volunteer and is not entitled to benefits, compensation, or overtime during any portion of this assignment; however, a transportation benefit may be provided depending on availability of funds. The volunteer is subject to the federal statutory and regulatory provisions that govern ethical and other standards of conduct, conflicts of interest, suitability, security, and limitations on political activity.
